Reddit suffered a dramatic decline following its third-quarter report, despite delivering excellent figures. The reason lies in Reddit's Google dilemma – the tension between the platform's value as a data source for AI and the simultaneous decline in organic search traffic caused by Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Google (and others) make extensive use of Reddit content for answers and training data, while the traditional referral of users to the site is declining. CEO Steve Huffman summed this up on October 29, 2026, during the Q3 results presentation: “AI Mode does not drive traffic. Not for us, and not to anybody, as far as I know. That’s just a fundamental shift in how Google works.” (Source) At the same time, according to Huffman, Reddit remains a “top search term” on Google, and crawling activity remains unchanged. Demand for the content therefore persists; it is the way that content is distributed that is changing.
Current situation based on the Q3 2026 figures
- Search referrals fell “meaningfully” in the third quarter, with the decline accelerating. In October, they averaged more than 1 million fewer referrals per week. If the trend continues, Daily Active Uniques (DAUq) could decline by a low double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter from a baseline of around 130 million.
- Global DAUq stood at 130.3 million (+12% year-on-year), while Weekly Active Uniques reached 515.2 million (+16%). In the US, the figure fell by 2% to 50.7 million (the first annual decline since the 2024 IPO), while international DAUq increased by 24% to 79.6 million.
- Revenue rose by 53% to $895 million (Advertising +54% to $847 million, Other Revenue +35% to $48 million). Net income was $283 million, while Adjusted EBITDA came in at $402 million (a margin of approximately 45%).
- Q4 guidance: revenue of $1.00–1.03 billion and Adjusted EBITDA of $480–510 million.
- The stock reacted with a sharp decline (reports cite a drop of around 18% in extended trading, followed by losses of more than 25–30% the next day and weekly declines in the range of 30–40% or more).
In parallel, Reddit has had a data licensing deal with Google in place since February 2024 (reportedly worth approximately $60 million annually, according to media reports, although this figure has not been confirmed), as well as a similar agreement with OpenAI (reportedly worth around $70 million, also unconfirmed). These contracts have been, or are currently, subject to renewal negotiations; reports of a possible non-renewal or tougher terms had already triggered volatility in the past. Reddit has also extended its separate cloud infrastructure agreement with Google through 2029.
In response to the search traffic developments, Reddit is testing a stronger logged-in-only experience from Q4 in selected markets outside the US, meaning that only users logged into the platform can read posts. According to the company, the aim is to improve the user experience, generate better advertising signals, increase engagement and protect its “extremely valuable corpus of data”. Logged-in users and app users already account for the majority of the platform's monetization (more than 80%). (Source)
Factors supporting Reddit's share price
- Strong monetization despite traffic pressure: Advertising is growing robustly, margins are high, and the focus on higher-value logged-in and app users already generates the bulk of revenue. Despite the traffic warning, guidance remains solid and underscores that Reddit does not rely solely on “drive-by” traffic.
- High content value and demand: Reddit remains one of the most frequently cited sources in AI-generated answers. Google continues to crawl the platform intensively, and “Reddit” remains a top search term. This indicates that the relevance of its communities has not diminished – only the path users take to reach the content has changed.
- Data licensing as a source of diversification: Other Revenue (primarily licensing) is growing and carries high margins. Reddit can point to the high value of its conversational data in negotiations and potentially secure better terms or additional partners. Login walls could strengthen its negotiating position by making uncontrolled scraping more difficult.
- Strategic adaptation: The shift towards direct, sticky usage (personalization, feeds, communities and video), as well as marketing measures to offset the loss of search traffic, is already underway. International expansion is also progressing strongly.
- Strong balance sheet: High cash flows and solid liquidity provide room for product investment and share buybacks.
Factors weighing on Reddit's share price
- Structural dependence on Google and AI search: The decline in referrals is not a temporary algorithm fluctuation but, in Huffman's own assessment, a fundamental shift. AI Overviews and AI Mode answer questions directly on the search page and push traditional links further down. This primarily affects logged-out users and web traffic, but also has an impact on re-engagement. A sustained decline in DAU would put pressure on the growth narrative.
- High expectations: Adjusted EBITDA guidance for the fourth quarter, at $480–510 million, is below analysts' expectations of around $512 million.
- User acquisition and visibility risks: A login wall could reduce scraping and unwanted use, but it could also potentially limit discoverability and reduce the number of new users arriving through search. Open web access has long been a key growth driver.
- Uncertainty surrounding data deals: The Google deal (and similar agreements) is strategically and financially significant. A non-renewal or substantially less favorable terms would affect both licensing revenue and the “AI data story”. At the same time, Reddit remains dependent on Google as a traffic and infrastructure partner.
- Valuation and sentiment sensitivity: The market places a high value on growth and platform quality. Warnings about DAU and search traffic can quickly trigger sharp share price movements, even when financial results beat expectations. Weakness in the US and dependence on a major partner further increase volatility.
- Industry-wide impact: Similar traffic declines are affecting publishers, review sites and other platforms. Reddit is not alone, but it is particularly exposed because its content features so prominently in AI-generated answers.
Reddit's Google dilemma – summary
The dilemma is real and asymmetric: Reddit provides valuable, human-generated content to AI systems (and receives partial compensation for it), but at the same time loses the traditional traffic channel that brought users to the platform and generated engagement. The company's figures so far demonstrate a strong ability to monetize through advertising and higher-value users, while its strategic response (a focus on logged-in users, product improvements and direct usage) is intended to support the transition. At the same time, dependence on Google's search ecosystem and uncertainty surrounding future traffic and licensing developments remain key risk factors for growth momentum and, consequently, valuation.
This is an objective assessment of the opportunities and risks based on available company statements and reports – not an assessment of the stock's investment attractiveness or a trading recommendation. Future developments will depend heavily on how sustainable the decline in search traffic proves to be, how successfully the shift towards direct usage is implemented and how the data deals evolve.
